How the 82-0 Engine Works
A game that asks you to chase perfection owes you an honest look at how it decides who wins. No black box. Here is exactly what happens every time you sim a 82-0 season — the same pace-and-space logic we argue about, written down, and tuned so the number on the scoreboard actually means something.
By the numbers: the one-line model
Every game resolves to a net rating — a single number, in points, that says how much better (or worse) your five project to be that night — which we then convert into a final score with a controlled amount of randomness. Positive net rating, you're favored; the bigger it is, the safer the win. It is the same currency the real analytics world uses: point differential per possession is the number that predicts winning, and the all-time-great teams top out around +10 to +12. Everything below is the honest list of what feeds that number.
What goes into net rating
- Your offense vs. their defense, and their offense vs. your defense. The core matchup. Each side's rating is built from real player attributes — three-point and interior scoring, playmaking, perimeter and interior defense, rebounding — weighted the modern way, so elite spacing opens a lead and a real defense caps what the other side can score. Rebounding edge gets its own smaller term on top.
- Era fit. Every player card carries its own era, and the season runs in a chosen era with its own pace, spacing, and physicality. Draft a roster whose game translates to the era you're playing in and the ratings hold up; force a poor fit and the tape shows it. The era is the environment.
- Chemistry, not raw stat-stacking. This is the part most games in this genre skip. A finished five earns named, explained reads — Elite Spacing, Defensive Identity, Twin Playmakers on the bonus side; Usage Conflict, Poor Era Fit and the like on the penalty side. Five ball-dominant scorers with no spacing or rim protection get dinged, exactly the way a real lopsided rotation would.
- Home-court edge. A flat swing of a few points for playing at home versus on the road — the same edge the real league has lived with for decades, and the reason road-heavy stretches bite.
- Fatigue over 82 games. The deeper into the season you go, the more a low-stamina roster wears down — the penalty scales with how far through the schedule you are. Perfect seasons aren't lost in October; they're lost on the second night of a back-to-back in February, so late games get harder.
- Injury luck. Each game carries a small chance a durability-thin roster takes a temporary in-game hit that drags down that night's rating. It's rare, it scales with era physicality, and it's exactly the kind of luck that ends real unbeaten runs. It never carries a permanent injury forward.
- Seeded variance. Basketball isn't deterministic, so we add a random swing every game. A more disciplined roster narrows that swing — fewer flukes in either direction — while a volatile group lives and dies on variance. The seed makes each simulated season reproducible.
From rating to a final score
The net rating is centered on an era-accurate scoring baseline — pace and scoring modifiers set how many points a typical night produces — then split between the two teams and nudged by a little more game-level noise so scores land where basketball scores actually land. If the two sides tie, we break it; there are no ties on the road to 82-0. The result is a win or a loss, the record updates, and the season rolls to the next game.
Why perfection is so rare here — on purpose
A single game can be a coin flip nudged your way. Eighty-two in a row is a different animal. Because each game multiplies against the last, even a +10 roster that projects as a heavy favorite most nights still runs into the wall of compounding probability — an 85% team is expected to lose around a dozen games, which is why the 73-9 Warriors and 72-10 Bulls, the two best regular seasons ever recorded, still lost nine and ten times.
